Garage planning can help to give you additional space if you add another car to your home or decide to renovate your garage into an extra room. Deciding if you need a one or two car garage can add appeal and extra space to your home. There are a few options to look at such as an attached garage or one that is separate from your residence.

You may think of having a separate garage from your house or you may want one that is attached to your house. Whatever your reason for deciding to expand your garage may need assistance of the experts.

Another idea to take into account is height, will this extra garage only keep a car or will bikes and boxes be stored away as well. You don’t want a garage that is cut to fit, expand as much as you can, adding on later will only cost more money. Talk with a contractor about general sizes after you measure.

If you want a two car garage then you will still need to measure what types of vehicles will be parking in it. Many people own larger SUV’s and need extra roof room to avoid bending antennas. If you want to hang bikes from the ceiling you’ll want to make sure to install a ceiling beam for extra support. Plan how you want to arrange extra storage when measuring.

Many garages are attached because you will need an extra permit to build a garage that is not attached. Check with your local zoning department to see what laws govern building away from your house, different codes require different buildings. Shop around to find the best garage for the money you want to spend; once it’s built it can only be painted and not added on to.

Turning your garage into an extra room takes planning too. Most garages are not finished and require insulation to combat the changing weather. If you have to install a bathroom or shower you will need to check with renovation laws regarding this type of construction. Most of the time you can make simple changes to a garage such as painting and carpet without too many problems.

Sometimes garage planning just means cleaning it out and getting rid of old stuff that is cluttering it up. Many people tend to clean their garage when a new car is purchased or when a member of the family moves away to college. Plan a garage sale and try to make some money for costs associated with repainting, what you don’t sell you can give away to charity, everyone benefits.

To make your garage always looking new and fresh, clean it and arrange the things stored on it. If it needs repainting, do so as long as it would not hurt your budget. Make the most out of your garage and enjoy the extra space for whatever function you want to. Just make sure that the garage planning was done thoroughly so as it would not create problems later on.
