Decorating Success For A Small Bathroom

A small bathroom can sometimes be a real bore – basic, uncomfortable and plain. Nothing special right? How else would you call a small space that is often seen as only a functional place?

The following are simple decorating techniques you can apply to make your rather space-challenged bathroom look as grand as a spacious bathroom:

To enhance the appearance of space, mirrors are extremely useful. If there is adequate wall space, put a large mirror on the wall behind the bathroom sink. Mirrors reflect light in the room as well as reflecting colors and patterns. In place of one large mirror, a grouping of smaller mirrors is also effective in creating the illusion of enlarged space.

Another size-enhancing technique is to use light colors like pastels, white and neutral shades. These colors reflect light instead of absorb it as with the case of dark colors. You can also use cool colors of greens and blues to accent a neutral shade for a more colorful interior.

If your small bathroom has visual obstructions such as a frosted glass shower or bath door, replace it with clear glass. Better yet, get rid of the glass door and use a shower curtain that can be left open when the shower is not in use. By getting rid of visual obstruction, your eyes will be able to see the back wall rather than vision being blocked by an obstruction that makes the room appear smaller than it really is.

Extra lighting does not take any space and costs very little. Lighting adds interest and opens up the appearance of your space. Recessed lighting, wall sconces and lamps add warmth and the illusion of increased space. If expense is not an issue, a great way to make your bathroom appear larger is to put in a skylight or a large window to bring more light into the room.

Color is very important in making a small room appear larger. Soft, pale, neutral tones create an illusion of space. Use “cool” colors to create a comfortable, serene atmosphere.

One decor that you shouldn’t miss is the area rug. The lack of accessories won’t be a problem with a piece of fabric on the floor to highlight the entire space. A light-colored area rug will help in making the bathroom look more spacious but if you prefer contrast, you can use an area rug with a rich color like red, brown or turquoise.

These are simple techniques but guaranteed to make your bathroom look better and bigger. Take note of the color, lighting and proper decors and you will never have plain, boring bathroom to speak of.
